New?

If you'd like to follow the current story, start here.

For the weekly gag strips you may have seen in the Whatcom Independent Newspaper, you'll want to start here.

These comics loop, so if you go off the end you'll start at the beginning again.

But there's even older comics with unfinished story arcs and even stranger artwork here.

And finally, if you want the prequel to it all, read The Dragon and the Radical.

    The FenReview

    Reviews Pending
    (12 Nov 2007)

This is really just a placeholder article for my new comic book review section. Here I will be reviewing a number of comic books that I have stacked up in my office. All of them have been published by their own authors, either using a vanity press, by hand, or by their own sole-proprietorship.

There are two purposes to these reviews. The first and foremost is to highlight work that I think every one of my readers should check out for some reason. It won't always be because I think the book is on the whole good. But it will always be because I do think the book is worth buying and scrutinizing and owning for later scrutinizing.

You can send me a book for possible review, if you like. I won't object:

    Fenmere, the Worm
    P.O. Box 2363
    Bellingham, WA 98227-2363

It must be via general post, though. Not UPS or Fed-Ex, for obvious reasons.

Also, there is a small chance I will buy your book and review it anyway. Which you can do nothing about. Or almost nothing. Which brings me to my second purpose for reviewing books.

You see, in college, one of the actually useful skills I was taught was how to critique something, and critique it well. Now I have found that when I critique other people's work, the care I take in my own work improves. I find myself becoming more aware of those elements that I feel make a piece better. The same is true of reading other people's critiques. So there will be a mutually beneficial result that comes of this.

It is my goal that, regardless of what I've found wanting or wrong with a comic, an artist reading my review will walk away eager to make more work! And I shall endeavor to do this to the best of my ability as well.

But I don't have an editor here. I can't afford one. So, I'm asking you all to act as my proofreaders and editors. Please let me know when you feel that I am not delivering. I'll always make the final call, of course, as these reviews will be my creations. But I can't improve as a reviewer and critic without proper feedback. So take full advantage of that comment button!

And now a list of author's who's work you may look forward to reading about:

The early stuff of Shannon Wheeler
    Von Allen
    Ainslee
    R.M. Kehrli
Mike Krahulic & Jerry Holkins (I have things to say, and even these guys could improve their stuff)
Fred Gallagher (same deal - also acts as a litmus test for my ability to critique)
    Neal Bailey
    Steve Harrison
Jamie Dee Galey (this means I have to buy one of his terrifying books)
    Eric Iverson
    Julie McGalliard
And a few others I think I have floating around...

Expect only one a month until I get up to speed. I'd like to do them weekly at the fastest, or as they come in as possible.
